About Gatepost

The Gatepost Theatre Company is an amateur theatre company specialising in drama, singing and dance.  Its members are aged from 15 upwards and new members are always most welcome.  The Group meet every Thursday evening at 7.30p.m. at the Loscoe Evergreen Centre, Loscoe, Derbyshire.

Gatepost Theatre Company was formed in 2004 by Kate and Jim Baker who had been involved in musical direction and production for many years.  Kate Baker was once Head of Performing Arts at Heanor Gate School where she also taught music, and was later awarded an M.B.E. in November 2004 for her services to musical education.  Jim Baker also taught at Heanor Gate School where he was Deputy Head Master.  While at school he organised and played in school concerts and productions.  Following their retirement Kate & Jim, formed The Gatepost Theatre Company which is now going from strength to strength.

2015 brought a new era for The Gatepost Theatre Company with Kate and Jim Baker sadly moving on to enjoy other projects.  However, the group continued to go from strength to strength with it’s new production team (many who were original members of Gatepost) rising to the challenge of producing Jonathan Larson’s Tony Award winning musical RENT!!

Running from 16th - 19th September RENT proved a huge success with fantastic reviews and each performance receiving a standing ovation - unheard of in Am Dram circles.

Gatepost continued to grow it’s reputation as one of the best amateur theatre companies in the region with it’s February 2016 sell-out production of ‘Rock Of Ages’ - wowing it’s audiences with the 80’s cutting edge comedy musical.

October 2016 saw Gatepost show it’s versatility and commitment to producing shows which are a break from the norm, as they once again wowed audiences with their production of ‘Return To The Forbidden Planet’ - Shakespeare’s forgotten ‘Rock’n’Roll’.

Gatepost’s first performance of the ‘Swinging Sixties’ was held at the Derby Guildhall Theatre. Subsequent performances have included ‘Eleanor Rigby’, ‘Summer Holiday’, ‘Godspell’, ‘Disco Inferno’, ‘Back to the 80’s’, ‘We Will Rock You’ and 'Fame' the latter two shows being complete sell outs.

July 2008 saw the company perform ‘Les Miserables’ to outstanding reviews from audiences.  Following on from the ‘Gatepost Goldies’ concert at Aldercar School the company went on to perform ‘Boogie Nights’ in March 2009 again at the Derby Guildhall Theatre.

July 2009 saw the company perform the world premier of ‘Tell Laura I Love Her’ at the Derby Guildhall Theatre, to a full house every night.  The production conceived by one of Gatepost’s own members, Richard Hague, received amazing reviews from those fortunate enough to have tickets.  March 2010 saw Gatepost perform another Derby premier that of ‘Fame Forever’, a memorable show stretching the talents of the company to new levels. The audience were amazed and enthralled by the vocal talents displayed and the dance routines performed.

July 2010 brought Gatepost back to the Guildhall Theatre in Derby to present ‘The Sensational Seventies’, the story of the 70's told through news items and music. The audiences who rocked to Status Quo  were wowed by Evita and Carly Simon in an amazing show of dance and outstanding vocals.

March 2011 saw one of Gatepost’s biggest successes to date when they performed ‘Summer Holiday’ at The Derby Theatre - a challenge which the group rose to, receiving great reviews from the press and audiences alike.

2012 to 2013 saw the group returning to the Guildhall Theatre, Derby to perform a variety of shows including, ‘Keep Smiling Through’, ‘Footloose’, ‘2012 A Space Oddity’, ‘The Wedding Singer’ and ‘Gatepost At The Movies’.

March 2014 saw Gatepost break into new ground by performing ‘Whatever You Want’ a show based around the music of Status Quo and written by musical director Kate Baker.

In July 2014 Gatepost took ‘Godspell’ to the Guildhall Theatre, Derby bringing their own unique flavour to the show by setting it on a Pirate ship. Once again the group broke into new ground by giving a number of it’s members the opportunity to direct and produce various scenes within the show - all which added to it’s undoubted success.

Most recently Gatepost performed ‘Out There’ at The Guildhall Theatre, Derby.  A new show created by James Bourne of McBusted fame, continued to show how Gatepost Theatre Company are willing to take on new challenges to produce musical theatre for it audiences.
